PM’s Telegram Channel Subscribers Approaching 1 Million

PHNOM PENH: Prime Minister Hun Sen’s Telegram channel now has the most subscribers of any world leader on the app. According to a press release from the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications on July 6, the PM now has over 930,000 Telegram followers, which is 10,000 more than the previous record holder, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Ever since the Prime Minister deleted his Facebook account on June 29, those wanting to keep up with his public emissions have had to find other platforms to connect with the Prime Minister. The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications has encouraged the public to follow the PM on his Telegram channel for fast and authentic communication.

The Prime Minister also made a TikTok account in an attempt to reach more young people and has a following of over 125 thousand. The move has not come without problems, however, as dozens of TikTok accounts use his name to the point where he has called for them to shut down their accounts or face “necessary actions.”

Prime Minister Hun Sen has been at odds with Facebook ever since its Oversight Board decided to review his account for inciting political violence in January. Before the board made its ultimate decision to suspend his account for six months, the Prime Minister deleted his account and announced Telegram as his central hub for social media. The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications then banned all 22 Oversight Board members from Cambodia on July 4, citing political motivations for their ruling.
